Burcon Nutrascience Corporation has achieved commercial production of fava protein and launched FavaPro 90%+, a high-purity fava protein isolate. The new product adds to the company’s portfolio of plant-based protein ingredients for the food, beverage, foodservice, nutrition, and nutraceutical industries.

Burcon has developed a proprietary process to extract and purify protein from fava beans, a sustainable legume known for high protein and fiber content. Fava beans are a nitrogen-fixing crop that improves soil and reduces the need for synthetic fertilizers, making them an environmentally-friendly ingredient source.

“The commercial launch of FavaPro marks an important milestone in Burcon’s growth strategy and demonstrates our ability to efficiently scale and diversify production at the Galesburg facility,” said Kip Underwood, chief executive officer.  “FavaPro was one of the most sought-after plant proteins at the recent IFT FIRST tradeshow. By adding this premium ingredient to our portfolio, we are meeting accelerating demand, enhancing Burcon’s position as an innovation leader in the rapidly growing plant protein market.”

FavaPro is non-GMO and hypoallergenic, and features a neutral flavor profile and off-white color, enabling integration into a wide variety of food and beverage applications, such as dairy alternatives, nutritional beverages, snacks, and baked goods.
